Robot Quadrotors Perform james Bond Theme

by the university of Pennsylvania

These flying quadrotors are completely autonomous, meaning humans are not controlling them; rather they are controlled by a computer programed with instructions to play the instruments.

Penn’s School of Engineering and Applied Science is home to some of the most innovative robotics research on the planet, much of it coming out of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab.

A robot that paints. It listens to it’s own sounds which occur by all the motors and mechanical elements. And uses these sounds as creative input to paint. So that makes a true interactive cycle between the artwork on a real canvas and the robot artist. And a human visitor could also modify the art by whispering in the microphone.

Madi multi-mallet automatic drumming instrument

Featuring 15 strikers of various types (hard plastic, rubber, felt, brushes) situated at various positions from the center to the rim of the drum, as well as a mechanism to switch the snares on and off, MADI is designed to maximize the timbral potential of a single snare drum. Using multiple solenoid-driven striking arms simplifies the design and minimizes constraints and latency. Individual arms are capable of rolling at audio rates (upwards of 60 Hz), and multiple arms can strike simultaneously. MADI was constructed August-September 2008.

”dancing” audioplayer from Sony, released in 2007

Rolly was an egg-shaped digital robotic music player made by Sony, combining music functions with robotic dancing. It had several motors that allow it to rotate and spin, as well as two bands of LED lights running around its edge and cup-like “wings” (or “arms” according to the Sony sonystyle USA website) which can open and close on either end, all of which could be synchronized to the music being played.  It had 2 gigabytes of flash memory to store music files.
